Listening Technology is a recently formed company that specializes in quantitatively enumerated subjective evaluations of audio systems. We use the Listening Technology method originally developed and implemented by David Clark of DLC Design in Wixom, Michigan.  Listening Technology uses more than 30 orthogonally different sound quality attributes rated individually on a scale of 1 to 5 and develops an overall system score by weighting sound quality attributes in order of importance.

 Tom Nousaine has been personally using the technique for over 15 years in listening evaluations of home and car audio products. In 1999 he became an Associate of DLC Design where he used the technique to evaluate over 700 OEM car audio systems. After David Clark became affiliated with Alpine-USA, Tom formed Listening Technology to continue his work without affiliation with any manufacturer, supplier or other interested party. He continues to use the PTF Measurement system, also developed by DLC Design, which supplies clients with a suite of useful objective measurements that can aid in acoustical diagnostics.

 Listening Tests result in an Audio Performance Report that provides numerical results for overall and individual sound quality attributes in categories of Tonal Balance, Spatial Rendition and Dynamics (both at foreground and background listening levels) plus measurements of system frequency response and dynamic capabilities. Each listening evaluation is taken with the vehicle being driven on suburban city streets or test tracks at approximately 45 mph. Every test consumes 2 to 3 hours, uses 63 standard reference programs that are commercially available and has both front seats occupied and evaluated which more closely emulates end-user listening situation than stationary evaluations that often employ a single listener without the engine running.  Notes about specific suggested areas that need improvement are also provided.
